We recommend a sturdy wooden spoon for the job.
- Instead than wrestling with the cork, just push it in.
- Firmly hold your bottle of wine on a flat surface, and make sure that it doesn't roll.
- Place the narrow end of the wooden spoon on the cork's center.
- Press down with your body weight. Your success is very dependent on the amount of pressure you apply to the cork, so you are quite likely to have to apply several tries before the cork begins moving, but once it does, the cork should begin to slide down the neck with no effort.
Once the cork has been placed in the bottle, pour the wine into another container.
Pull out your toolbox and get started!
For those interested, there is another technique to open a wine bottle with ordinary items in your house.
- Go ahead and get the longest screw you have in your toolbox, and use it to drill a ½-inch hole right through the middle of the cork. The screw should protrude out of the top, leaving approximately ½ of an inch hanging out.
- Grasp the neck of the bottle firmly, keeping the body of the bottle tucked securely under your arm.
- Before you begin prying out the cork, be sure you grab the screw with the claw-end of a hammer. Gently and steadily peel the cork out of the bottle using the claw-end of the hammer.
Wiggle It Out
You may attempt and drive the cork out of your bottle of wine by putting repeated pressure to the bottom of the bottle, but take note: if you use too much power, you risk shattering your bottle of wine. Try using a few deep breaths, and locate that sweet spot where mild pressure is applied.
Additionally, you'll need to apply some type of cushioning to the bottom of the bottle to preserve the glass. A thick kitchen towel that's been folded in half is a terrific alternative, as is a shoe, which some people may be surprised to learn is an ideal cleaning tool. Putting the bottle inside a clean sock, before to using your shoe, is a good idea.
- To remove the cork from the bottle, make sure the bottle is securely resting on a wall, then repeatedly hit the bottle against the wall at a 90-degree angle in a steady, rhythmic beat.
- Once the bottle is in motion, begin tapping it against the wall in faster, smaller motions until the cork is almost halfway out.
- Pull on the cork, giving it a forceful twist as you pull.
- Otherwise, give it a couple more wall smacks to complete the trick.
